About Latin jazz and Latinjazznet

Latin jazz, historically speaking, is the product of Afro Cuban music (rhythms) and American jazz, however, as it changed and evolved it embraced the most diverse rhythms from Latin America and developed into a defined genre with a Pan-American projection.

Latin Jazz Network is the brainchild of Editor and Webmaster Danilo Navas, a passionate and committed communicator with a sensibility for the arts, who resides in Toronto, Canada. Along the way, Tomas Peña joined the project, initially as a contributing writer and later on as Co-Editor. Based in Teaneck, New Jersey, Tomas is a music journalist who has been covering the music scene, in large part through the use of one-one-one interviews with established as well as up and coming artists like: Danilo Pérez, Claudia Acuña, Willie Martínez, Elio Villafranca, Dafnis Prieto and Brian Lynch. Since 2008, former musician Raul da Gama joined our team as contributing writer. Raul is an accomplished writer who lives in Milton, Ontario, and whose profound analysis is reinforced by his deep understanding of music, technically as well as historically. Oscar Montagut, who graduated in journalism and education in Colombia, joined our ranks a few years ago. He also finished his postgraduate program in Creative Writing in Canada. Currently Oscar works as an English teacher, translator, and freelance writer in Bogotá. He is a music collector, explorer and promoter of World Music.

Over the years there have been many people who have contributed to the growth of Latin Jazz Network. We appreciate and acknowledge their contributions.

Part of our mandate is to present the creations of independent as well as established musicians. Through our web site, we have introduced new artists to the public from as far away as Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Italy, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands. And of course from United States and Canada.
