Trombonist, composer and arranger Papo Vazquez is more than thirty-five years into a career spanning the jazz, Latin, Afro-Caribbean and classical music and recording worlds. His Mighty Pirates Troubadours band is a seven piece Afro Puerto Rican Jazz group.
Last year 2011 he was presented by Pregones Theater an NEA Latino Masters Award under the National Endowments for the Arts American Masterpieces. In 2010, Papo was commissioned on behalf of Wynton Marsalis for a new work inspired by Cuban painter Wilfredo Lam; which was then performed as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz and Art concert series. Papo won a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album for “Papo Vazquez Mighty Pirates” in 2008 for his recording Marooned/Aislado, on his own independent label, Picaro Records.

Qatar Airways Festival Launches with Nightly Performances In June
New York, NY (May 1, 2013) Throughout June, Jazz at Lincoln Center acknowledges partner Qatar Airways with the first Qatar Airways Festival in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. To celebrate Qatar Airways’ world-class standard of excellence, the featured jazz artists are recognized for their brilliance and talent. Festival artists include Bill Charlap, Cyrus Chestnut, Willie Jones III, Juilliard Jazz Ensemble, Joe Locke, Buster Williams, and more.
For the fifth year, Jazz at Lincoln Center collaborates with Made in the UK Jazz Concert Series, which has become the largest presentation of British jazz outside of the United Kingdom. This year’s series includes sets by the Cleveland Watkiss Quartet and the Soweto Kinch Trio.
