The son of drummer Ruy López–Nussa and nephew of pianist Ernan López–Nussa, 29–year-old pianist Harold López-Nussa is one of the brightest lights on Havana’s thriving jazz scene.
Harold gained international attention when he won top honors at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005 – a triumph that earned him a featured festival spot the following year. Harold made his US debut as a bandleader on the acclaimed 2009 album Herencia and followed up in 2011 with El País de las Maravillas featuring the trio and special guest saxophonist David Sánchez. “Harold López-Nussa has superior keyboard skills and an uncommon ability to play independent chord sequences with his left hand as he improvises with the right,” wrote Irwin Block in the Montreal Gazette. “He makes it all sound rich, rewarding and cohesive…” The pianist and his brother, the phenomenal drummer Ruy Adrián López-Nussa, will perform two intense duo sets on Tuesday, June 18th. Sets at 7:30PM and 9:30PM. – only at Jazz Standard!
