Welcome To The Puerto Rico Project!

In 2017, I created the PUERTO RICO PROJECT in response to the devastating impact of Hurricane María on the island and its music community. Inspired by conversations with musicians in New York and on the island, I composed the article, “William Cepeda, After the Storm.” Since then, I have traveled to the island and broadened the Project’s vision and scope to include: historical pieces, interviews, profiles, music and book reviews, and in-depth analysis of the island’s music, art, and culture.

The Puerto Rico Project pays tribute to Boricua Pioneros and Pioneras: Manuel Tizol, Juan Tizol, Angelina Rivera, Noro Morales, César Concepción, Sylvia Rexach, Leopoldo Fleming, Sylvia Del Villard, Ana Otero, Joe Loco, Charlie Palmieri and James Reese Europe among others.

Also, it recognizes established and emerging artists such as Henry Cole, Fabiola Méndez, Fernando García, William Cepeda, Richard Pena, Lolivone de Rosa, Charlie Sepúlveda, Miguel Zenón, Alfonso Fuentes, Plena Combativa, Furito Ríos, David Sánchez and artists in the classical realm as well as Salseros and Salseras past and present: Yolanda Rivera, Tite Curet Alonso, Cano Estremera, La Sonora Ponceña and Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez.

On occasion, it revisits classic recordings such as Cal Tjader and Eddie Palmieri’s El Sonido Nuevo and Cortijo’s Time Machine/La Máquina del Tiempo and The Alegre All-Stars (Volume 1)

Occassionally, it revisits classic recordings such as Cal Tjader and Eddie Palmieri’s El Sonido Nuevo and Cortijo’s Time Machine/La Máquina del Tiempo and The Alegre All-Stars (Volume 1).

The Puerto Rico Project is a virtual hub for all things related to the island’s music, art, and culture. Welcome to the Puerto Rico Project! Read, learn, enjoy!

¡Lee, aprende, disfruta!
