Rumba for Tata Güines – June 28 to 30, 2020

Rumba for Tata Güines

Federico Arístides Soto Alejo (Tata Güines) will be remembered this month in his homeland, Güines. For the 90th anniversary of his birth on June 30th, 2020, in the Leguina neighborhood, the National Center for Popular Music and the Provincial Directorate of Culture in Mayabeque have organized the first Cuba Rumba Tata Güines In Memoriam Festival, between June 28th and 30th this year.

The tribute, which will come through Instagram and Facebook, will include the presentation of scientific works, interviews, internet concerts, video selections and other audiovisual proposals. The following groups: Orisha Oko, Obanwala, Kaidara, Tambores de Bejucal and Rumberos de Mayabeque will participate, and under the direction of Raúl Jesús Cabrera León “El Gallo”, will be in charge of closing the meeting through a digital mini-concert on the 30th at 3:00 pm.

According to the Organizing Committee, other actions that will pay tribute to the King of the drum are a sample of 90 snapshots of the musician, which will be inaugurated in the Provincial Library Raúl Gómez García, in Güines, in the afternoon of June 29, to which Telemayabeque joins, through a special informative magazine; the placement of a wreath in the niche that keeps his remains in the local Cemetery and the launch of the Fifth video around the world online, in coordination with foreign musicians (both on June 30).

Also remembered as the King of the congas, Federico Arístides Soto Alejo (June 30, 1930- Havana, February 4, 2008), creator of a very personal style in the execution of the drums, founded his own group in 1964: Tata Guïnes and the Tatagüinitos. He toured the world and shared with the best musicians on the planet, but he never stopped returning to his country, to his small town, where he will always be venerated.
