Best known for his decade–plus position in the Danilo Perez piano trio, Adam Cruz takes a creative giant step forward with the release of Milestone (Sunnyside Records), his debut album as leader. “I’ve invested a lot of time in practicing and studying, working at my relationship with the piano and developing a compositional voice,” says the 40–year old musician. “There’s a certain amount of growth and maturity that I have gone through, deepening my dedication as a drummer and composer.” Milestone features eight original Cruz compositions and the all–star band he’ll lead this week on our stage. The music strikes a rare balance between smart, detailed writing and freedom, with plenty of space for the personalities and ideas of the individual players: “I knew with this personnel that I’d be getting the kind of depth, sensitivity and versatility…that would enable them to shine, yet also yield to a group aesthetic at the same time.”

The wonderful bassist, bandleader and composer Pedro Giraudo has graced our stage many times, but this one–night stand promises to be something special: It will feature the music of his new album, Córdoba, due out 6/14/2011 on Zoho Music. This exceptional recording features a large ensemble playing eight new Giraudo compositions including “Sol Naciente” (“Sun Rising”), “A La Escuela” (“The Road to School”), and the ambitious three–part suite “Pueblo” (“Village”). “Whether writing about a sunrise or an encounter,” says Pedro Giraudo, “my music is informed by the essential sentimental and rhythmic elements of Argentine popular music, including the chacarera, zamba, and baguala, as well the more urban Argentine tango. For me, one of the most powerful emotions is nostalgia — in the case of this album, my nostalgia for the innocence, the excitement of discovery, and the beauty of those summers spent with my family in the beautiful Córdoba countryside.”

It includes classics by Wayne Shorter (“Footprints”) and Charlie Parker (“Donna Lee”) along with Harold’s scintillating originals like “Mi Son Cerra” and “E’cha.” In an April 2011 ceremony in Paris, Harold Lopez-Nussa was presented with the prestigious French Adami “Talents Jazz 2011″ award.
